My childhood was spent in the kitchen. I grew up in Stamford, CT in a very large Italian family. “Eat, dollie eat” was a common chant around our house. My parents were the first generation to be born here in the states. Fresh baked bread, spaghetti and meatballs and my dad’s peaches soaked in homemade wine were the norm.

I dabbled in everything that was being made, getting an education in the culinary just by hanging around the table.  One of my first cakes failed to rise, a catastrophe until I made another one (under supervision) and found out what went wrong. I learned by doing, today my kids are carrying on this tradition.

Kids Cooking, will provide fun cooking projects to share with children. Think about all that is involved in making a recipe – measuring, counting, reading, science, timing, and best of all tasting. In fact, the art of creating a meal may be more memorable than the actual result. Have fun, and don’t forget to email me with your ideas and suggestions, aside from being published you will receive a really cool Gourmet Mom T-Shirt.

Short on Time - try a Taste Test

We have lots of taste tests – they are fast and fun to do. I have my kids close their eyes and taste different varieties of the same fruit, we recently tasted several types of kiwi. We were surprised to find a kiwi that tasted like banana. The kids not only pick their favorite, but also describe the taste and texture and get to know the differences. Other times we make blender drinks and just vary the amount of ingredients to see which we like best. Is the drink better with one cup of vanilla yogurt or two? Keep a notebook to track progress.
